Can Stress Cause Wrinkles?

Over the years, we've come to terms with the fact that wrinkles are inevitable. That's true; we can slather our face with a line-up of anti-aging lotions and potions, with the hope they'll help—but the truth is told, it's not a matter of if my skin will form wrinkles; it is a matter of when. What happens, though, when wrinkles sprout early because of stress? Stress?! Yes.

When you’re stressed, your body responds with the fight-or-flight syndrome – a cascade of hormonal activity that can wreak havoc on your health. this hormonal activity doesn’t just affect your internal health.

What exactly is Stress?

Whether you know it or not, stress affects your body both mentally and physically. Stress is essentially our body's flight-or-fight response, and it’s triggered when our nervous system senses a threat.

Whether this threat is a sales target at work, an approaching Lion in the forest, or you are under emotional pressure, your nervous system goes into action and produces larger quantities of the chemicals such as cortisol, adrenaline, and noradrenaline with a quickened heart rate, extra sweating, increased alertness, insomnia, and irregular sleep, all that, has huge negative effects on your body and skin.

How could Stress cause wrinkles?

Research has shown that the impact of stress can cause premature wrinkles, and constantly being stressed certainly doesn’t help your daily anti-aging routine.

Cortisol, the primary stress hormone, has been known to break down the skin collagen, among other effects. The more stressed and longer you are in the situation, the more cortisol your body produces. Eventually, your skin cells won’t naturally rebuild the elastin and collagen as well as they used to before.

Stress can exacerbate the appearance of wrinkles when it comes to little sleep; poor diet, dry skin, and lack of exercise are all things that can negatively affect your skin’s appearance, leaving your skin looking dull and tired. If these stress-induced unhealthy occurrences become regular habits, then it’s no wonder that you may even see more forehead wrinkles, under-eye wrinkles, and frown lines form.
